Canon Probably Will Release a Mark II Version of the EOS R3

We recently covered speculation about a possible EOS R5 Mark II being released by Canon in early 2024. Now an R3 Mark II is also maybe coming, but later.
Canon Rumors has reported that the iconic photo equipment and camera company will likely also release an EOS R3 Mark II edition of its best-selling pilot camera for the mirrorless market, but in 2025.
Canon’s plans for a Mark II edition in 2025 seem a bit far off considering the sort of competition that Canon has been getting from impressive product releases by rival brands like Nikon and Sony.
Nonetheless, even a 2025 reboot of the R3 is something interesting to look forward to if you’re a Canon fan and it will mean still more new tech developments for the would-be camera.
The original Canon EOS R3 was very impressive when released and remains so to this day. It represented major advancements in mirrorless camera development for Canon.
With its model name, this camera wasn’t a replacement for Canon’s R1 but it also had no direct connection to Canon’s previous camera with a 3 in its name. This was the Canon EOS 3, which was a completely different DSLR camera.
With the original R3, Canon offered a great shooter for professional photographers who wanted more than the R5 could offer. It was and still is a fine camera for sports, photojournalism and serious street photography among many other uses.
With its advanced capabilities, the original R3, despite being nearly three years old, is still a compelling device at a steep but fairly reasonable price for its specs.

It has however been eclipsed by certain new cameras from rivals Sony and Nikon, which cost less than the original R3 but feature some of today’s best AI-based autofocus capabilities, which the R3 lacks.
How the R3 Mark II will improve upon its predecessor will be interesting to see. Speculatively, we can almost certainly look forward to better low-light capabilities and much more precise AF in terms of focus points and sensor quality.
Also, we’ll almost certainly see advanced AI tech in the Mark II version. This enhancement is nearly a must-have for any new premium camera competing with the likes of Sony’s new A7R V and A9 III or Nikon’s 2023 Z8 or Zf cameras.
This is not to mention potential new releases from these or other brands in 2024 before the Canon EOS R3 Mark II even (supposedly) hits the market.
