Photoshop for Music? Adobe Teases Text-to-Music Generative AI Tool

Researchers at Adobe are developing a generative AI tool that can quickly turn text prompts into pieces of music. It can also revise, cut, and loop sections of music, effectively functioning as a track-editing tool as well, according to a new video from Adobe.Users can type in adjectives and music genres to describe the kind of audio they want the AI model to create. The tool—currently dubbed Project Music GenAI Control—seems potentially useful for YouTubers, influencers, and podcasters looking for some royalty-free intro, outro, or background music. It’s unclear what data Adobe’s tool is trained on, however.”With Project Music GenAI Control, generative AI becomes your co-creator. It helps people craft music for their projects, whether they’re broadcasters, or podcasters, or anyone else who needs audio that’s just the right mood, tone, and length,” says Adobe Senior Research Scientist Nicholas Bryan in a blog post.”One of the exciting things about these new tools is that they aren’t just about generating audio—they’re taking it to the level of Photoshop by giving creatives the same kind of deep control to shape, tweak, and edit their audio. It’s a kind of pixel-level control for music,” Bryan adds.Researchers at the University of California, San Diego and Carnegie Mellon University are also contributing to the generative AI music project.

Adobe already offers audio editing through Adobe Audition and Adobe Premiere Pro, though it’s unclear if its music AI tool might be offered in the future as a standalone product or as an integration within an existing app.

Like Google, Meta, and Microsoft, Adobe has also been working on AI tools for a number of different use cases. It’s already released Firefly for image generation, and recently announced its AI Assistant tool to help Acrobat and Reader users analyze and edit their PDF documents. Last year, Google rolled out its AI music generator, MusicLM, which allows users to generate music clips up to 30 seconds in length. And while there are already some other AI-powered music-generation tools out there, some electronic music artists like 3LAU and Grimes have developed AI models of their own.
