Vivo’s V30 Pro Smartphone Wants To Be a Zeiss-Powered Portrait Master

Chinese smartphone company Vivo released the V30 smartphone earlier this month, promising better portraits thanks to a smarter flash. The company is back with another V30-series smartphone, the powerful V30 Pro. Featuring an imaging system co-engineered with iconic photography brand Zeiss, the Vivo V30 Pro boasts a triple main camera system and Zeiss Style Portrait, allowing users to create professional-level portraits with their smartphone. “We are thrilled to expand our imaging collaboration with Zeiss and bring our joint expertise to the V series for the first time. With each of the three rear cameras offering professional-grade imaging quality that meets Zeiss Optics standards, users can expect an exceptional portrait photography experience,” promises Yongduan Zhou, Vivo’s General Manager of Overseas Products. Camera Array Features Trio of 50-Megapixel Cameras The V30 Pro features a 50-megapixel Professional Portrait Camera, which offers a 50mm-equivalent focal length akin to popular portrait prime lenses. The 50MP resolution is more than four times greater than the previous 12-megapixel portrait camera. The extra resolving power also enables a 2x zoom. Alongside the high-res portrait (telephoto) camera is a 50-megapixel AF Ultra Wide-Angle Camera with a 119-degree field of view. It is the first 50MP ultra wide-angle camera in a Vivo V-series device to include autofocus. It also has an AI Group Portrait mode to take clear portraits of up to 30 people. The smartphone’s primary camera follows suit, sporting a 50MP image sensor. It includes a Type 1/1.49 image sensor, the largest in the V series. The lens includes optical image stabilization. This same unit was also seen in last December’s Vivo X100 Pro flagship device. Color Profiles and Smart Flash Drive Smartphone Portraiture All three cameras work alongside Vivo’s Color System Professional Colors feature, which allows users to customize color profiles to their taste. Three distinct profiles are included, like the Zeiss Natural Color option that has been co-developed to deliver realistic and natural colors and tones. There are also Vivid Color and Textured Color options. As for portrait photography, the Zeiss Style Portrait mode offers six different portrait-style bokeh options inspired by real-life Zeiss lenses. These include Zeiss Biotar, Sonnar, Planar, Distagon, Cinematic Style Bokeh, and Zeiss Cine-Flare Portrait. The V30 Pro also debuts Zeiss Cinematic Video Bokeh. This video mode records a cinematic 2.39:1 aspect ratio and uses AI-based depth calculations to create more realistic artificial bokeh effects. Like the standard V30 phone, the V30 Pro includes Vivo’s Aura Light Portrait mode to deliver a soft, flattering flash for portrait subjects. The light automatically adjusts its color temperature based on a subject’s surroundings. Vivo says the Aura Light is also sensitive to distance and automatically adjust the brightness level based on the subject’s distance. Additional New Features and Improvements Beyond the photography features, the new handheld sports a sleek, thin design. It has a curved 1.5K Ultra Clear Sunlight Display with a peak local brightness of 2,800 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate. The phone has a hefty 5,000 mAh battery, 12GB of RAM, and a large vapor chamber to keep the device cool and stable during extended use. At the time of publication, Vivo had not yet released pricing and market availability information. Image credits: Vivo
