Huawei signs a global patent cross-licensing agreement with vivo

Huawei announced today it signed a multi-year patent cross-license agreement with vivo, one month after fellow Nokia did the same. The Chinese smartphone maker has agreed to pay royalties for 5G technologies, opening the door for the company to operate in countries, where Huawei owns certain 5G patents.

Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Department, said the agreement reflects the “mutual respect for the value of each other’s patents”. It will pave the way for both companies to work together in the future.

The executive also added that the two companies are jointly funding research and are committed to standardizing and sharing the fruits of innovation. A statement from vivo has not been issued yet.

This is the second major agreement Huawei has signed in the past 24 hours, the other being with Amazon. It will allow the US company to use WiFi and video playback-related patent technologies in Germany and across the world.
