Asus unveils ROG Ally X gaming handheld with better thermals, RAM, battery, and more

Asus has launched a new ROG Ally X handheld gaming PC. The company’s latest handheld is not a full successor to the original ROG Ally. It’s a slightly tweaked version of the original handled with subtle improvements. Asus’ solid hardware makes the ROG Ally the biggest rival in the gaming handheld market, and now the brand’s Ally X refreshed version is all set to dominate the handheld market.

Asus made some minimal changes to the chassis of the latest ROG Ally X, but you won’t be able to spot it quickly until you take a closer look at it. The first noticeable difference is the color, the ROG Ally X now comes in a Black finish and that looks quite catchy. Asus also completely tweaked the overall chassis design: the edges are now more rounded, and the grips, buttons, and stick locations have also been slightly rearranged. All the changes on the chassis were made to make the handheld more ergonomic, said Asus.

Asus also changed the old joystick material with more durable and sturdier materials that are rated for a 5 million cycle lifespan. And, there is also the addition of two new USB Type C ports that were originally replaced with the XG mobile port.

Speaking of hardware, Asus has made some important changes to its internals. The ROG Ally X features a whopping 24GB LPDDR5X-7500 RAM and 1TB M.2 2280 SSD. The handheld boasts an 80Wh battery, offering more playtime than Ally’s 2 hours. Asus also incorporated a redesigned motherboard featuring an M.2 2280 factor slot for easier upgrading. There is no upgrade in the processor. It still features the same AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor.

Asus also enhanced thermals for better heat dissipation. The ROG Ally X has got new fans with 50% thinner blades for better airflow. The two new tunnels in the fan’s housing push up to 24% more air volume than before and keep the panel cool up to 6°C.

All these upgrades make the ROG Ally X pricer than the original Ally. Right now, Ally X is available for pre-order exclusively via Best Buy in the US for $799. Asus will start shipping the ROG Ally X in July.
