HyperOS Beta Introduces ChatGPT-Style Intelligence to Xiaomi 14

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into mobile operating systems has become an industry standard. Leading manufacturers like Google (Gemini), Samsung (Galaxy AI), and Apple (Apple Intelligence) have all implemented AI assistants to enhance user experiences. Xiaomi, however, has been relatively quiet on this front. However, recent developments suggest they are catching up with the introduction of AI-powered features in their Notes app within the HyperOS beta for the Xiaomi 14.

This move signifies Xiaomi’s commitment to incorporating intelligent functionalities into their devices. As Android 15 enters testing on the Xiaomi 14 and HyperOS 2.0 nears release, the developer version in China reveals Xiaomi’s plans for AI integration. Their strategy appears to focus on embedding generative AI tools directly within the operating system.

Kacper Skrzypek, a developer of the popular Xiaomi.eu ROM, discovered the inclusion of AI-generated summaries within the Notes app. This functionality mirrors tools like ChatGPT. Allowing Xiaomi’s AI to automatically generate summaries of text written or pasted into the app. Furthermore, the AI can extract relevant web information to enrich the summaries when links are included within the note. Similarly, pasting text from the clipboard triggers the AI to generate an expanded version of the content.

It’s important to note that HyperOS’s AI functions require an internet connection. Suggesting the processing occurs on remote servers rather than on the device itself. Additionally, Skrzypek’s testing revealed a potential censorship mechanism. When attempting to summarize a Wikipedia article on Tiananmen Square, the AI responded with “This content is sensitive.” This suggests Xiaomi may implement content moderation functionalities within their AI tools.
While these initial tests are confined to the Chinese version of HyperOS, the global performance of the AI assistant remains to be seen. We can expect a more prominent role for AI in the upcoming HyperOS 2.0, likely to launch alongside Android 15 in the coming months. This development signifies Xiaomi’s commitment to elevate the user experience through intelligent features, solidifying their position in the increasingly competitive landscape of AI-powered smartphones.
