Amazon Strengthens AI Arsenal With Key Hires From Adept

Amazon is taking a big step forward in the world of artificial intelligence by bringing in some top-notch talent from Adept, a San Francisco startup that’s been turning heads with its AI-powered agents. This strategic acquisition includes David Luan, Adept’s co-founder and CEO, along with co-founders Augustus Odena, Maxwell Nye, Erich Elsen, and Kelsey Szot. They will join Amazon’s Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) division, led by longtime executive Rohit Prasad.Adept, founded in 2022, quickly gained a reputation for its innovative AI agents that perform complex tasks without human intervention. Their software automates routine tasks like data extraction from documents, email management, and application processing. In March 2023, the startup raised $350 million in a Series B funding round, bringing its valuation to $1 billion. Despite its impressive technology, Adept encountered numerous challenges, including high computing and labour costs.Rohit Prasad, in a memo to Amazon employees, emphasised the importance of this addition, stating that Luan and his colleagues bring invaluable expertise in training advanced multimodal foundational models and developing practical artificial intelligence solutions. Despite the departure of key figures, Adept will continue to operate independently under the new leadership of Zach Brock, the former head of engineering. The company will focus on developing agentic AI solutions, leveraging its in-house models, data, and infrastructure. Adept acknowledged that staying on course to build both general intelligence and enterprise agent products would have required significant fundraising, diverting attention from their primary vision. This shift allows Adept to concentrate on creating impactful AI solutions without the burden of extensive capital raising. The integration of Adept’s team and technology with Amazon comes at a critical time as Microsoft and Google are rapidly developing their AIs. The company has invested billions in AI ventures, including Anthropic, and is continually pioneering across its product lines. Recent developments include “Amazon Q,” a generative AI-powered assistant for enterprises, and “Remarkable Alexa,” a revamped version of their voice assistant with advanced AI features.Luan will oversee the “AGI Autonomy” division at Amazon, focusing on creating advanced software that approaches human-level capabilities. This move is part of Amazon’s broader goal to integrate AI across its services, enhancing both consumer and enterprise experiences.Companies are racing to develop sophisticated AI systems, and regulatory scrutiny is intensifying. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating several high-profile AI deals, including Microsoft’s investment in Inflection and Amazon’s in Anthropic, to ensure compliance with antitrust regulations. If you liked this story, please follow us and subscribe to our free daily newsletter.
