Instagram recently started labeling real photos with its new tag “Made with AI,” causing a fierce backlash. So, Meta announced that it’s changing how it labels “manipulated media” on its platforms, specifically on Instagram. The “Made with AI” tag will be replaced with “AI Info.”
Meta says that the AI tag was a response to its Oversight Board’s recommendations in the first place. The board suggested “transparency and additional context” as a better approach to handling manipulated media, aiming to avoid restricting free speech. However, Meta’s initial “Made with AI” label was criticized for being broad, inaccurate, and misleading. AI editing tools in Adobe Photoshop triggered the label, even on photos minimally modified with AI, as DIYP reported last month.
While the wording is changing, Meta claims that it remains committed to labeling AI-generated content.
“We want people to know when they see posts that have been made with AI. Earlier this year, we announced a new approach for labeling AI-generated content,” the tech giant writes in a recently updated blog post. “An important part of this approach relies on industry standard indicators that other companies include in content created using their tools, which help us assess whether something is created using AI.”
“Like others across the industry, we’ve found that our labels based on these indicators weren’t always aligned with people’s expectations and didn’t always provide enough context. For example, some content that included minor modifications using AI, such as retouching tools, included industry standard indicators that were then labeled “Made with AI.” While we work with companies across the industry to improve the process so our labeling approach better matches our intent, we’re updating the “Made with AI” label to “AI info” across our apps, which people can click for more information.”
Despite the update, concerns remain about the vagueness of “industry standard indicators.” There’s still potential for the label to disproportionately impact certain editing workflows, especially since AI editing tools are now everywhere. Meta’s commitment to user transparency and responsible AI implementation will be closely watched as it refines its approach to labeling manipulated media.
