It seems like just about every day of the year is a holiday of one sort or another, and March 31 is World Backup and Storage Day. It’s also National Baked Ham with Pineapple Day, Hug A Medievalist Day and a little thing called Easter, but none of those occasions are germane to the work that we do here at PCMag. Created by drive manufacturer Maxtor, World Backup and Storage Day gently reminds computer users to make a copy of their important files to an additional drive just in case the unthinkable happens. If you feel like celebrating this year, we’ve got three deals on well-reviewed drives that will make it even more of a party.
Samsung is well known for external drives that can take a licking and keep on ticking, and the T7 is a great compromise between price and performance, especially at $60 off. We reviewed the Samsung T7 and said that it was “a tiny, handy storage device with solid performance for its class, and while it lacks the convenience of the T7 Touch’s biometric security, its strong password-protected encryption should be more than adequate to protect your data.” Transfer speeds of up to 1050 MB/s are plenty fast enough, and 256-bit AES encryption will keep your files from prying eyes.
Need something a little bit beefier? Boasting a whopping 12 terabytes of storage, this Western Digital external drive will provide a one-stop backup solution for multiple machines, featuring solid build quality and USB 3.0 and 2.0 support. Obviously you’ll get faster speeds with the 3.0 connection. It’s a breeze to set up with simple plug-and-play drivers and works on both Windows and macOS machines, as well as gaming consoles. With file sizes getting bigger and bigger, you might have to make the jump soon, so grab it at $60 off.
Internal drives are also on sale if you’re building a new battlestation, and we gave high marks and an Editors’ Choice award to Western Digital’s SN850X drive in our review. We said that the internal SSD features “an upgrade in flash memory that boosts sequential read and especially write speeds,” which can get as fast as 7,300 MB/s, and in benchmarks it comfortably stood at the top of the heap. The included WD_BLACK Dashboard software monitors drive stability and can detect when games are launched to adjust performance. This is a great drive at 26% off.
