OpenAI Expands ChatGPT ‘Memory’ Feature to All Plus Users

UPDATE 4/30: OpenAI’s memory feature is now available to all ChatGPT Plus users, except for those based in Europe or Korea. “Based on feedback from our earlier test, ChatGPT now lets you know when memories are updated,” OpenAI says. “We’ve also made it easier to access all memories when updates occur—hover over ‘Memory updated,’ then click ‘Manage memories’ to review everything ChatGPT has picked up from your conversations and forget any unwanted memories. You can still access memories at any time in settings.”Original Story 2/14:Work with ChatGPT long enough, and its limitations become clear. You’ll find yourself frequently reminding it about details you already explained, for example, but a new test from OpenAI may solve that problem.OpenAI’s latest endeavor gives ChatGPT a “memory” of sorts. It can pick up specific details you’ve given it and reference them across conversations. In one example from OpenAI, you could have told it in a previous conversation that your toddler loves jellyfish. In a future chat, when you ask for birthday card ideas, it might suggest a jellyfish wearing a hat. The implications go far beyond simple gift ideas, though. Some of the best use cases for ChatGPT involve speeding up tasks you may only have some skill at, like creating recipes or massaging your writing (just don’t try to make it write your whole novel). But with a memory capability, you wouldn’t need to constantly remind ChatGPT about food allergies or that the Oxford comma is a requirement for good grammar. But if you’re worried about ChatGPT learning too much or not learning the details you want, OpenAI has options. You can specify details it should remember in new Personalization settings rolling with Memory. In those same settings, you can also delete details ChatGPT learned or turn the feature off altogether. And if you want the Memory feature on in general, but need to have a quick conversation ChatGPT shouldn’t learn from, a new Temporary Chat option turns off learning for that particular conversation.

GPTs will also get these memory options, which could be helpful for story-writing GPTs, or even book-recommendation GPTs. You won’t have to constantly remind it about a character’s name or your preferred genre.OpenAI says it’s testing the new memory feature with a small subset of free users and Plus subscribers and will share plans for a broader rollout “soon.” Naturally, any or all of these features could change during the testing period.
