Proscenic L60 Smart Lock Review

The Proscenic L60 is a smart lock you can operate with your phone, a fingerprint scan, a PIN code, an NFC card, or with traditional keys. It’s easy to install and works well, but you have to pay extra for a Wi-Fi hub to use voice commands and to access the lock remotely. At $109.99, the Proscenic L60 is a solid value for a smart lock with the convenience of fingerprint ID, which allows you to unlock the door with a single press. If you can increase your budget, the $199.99 Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro Wi-Fi remains our Editors’ Choice winner as it offers a number of additional perks including built-in Wi-Fi and automatic unlocking support, and can often be found at a discount if you shop around.Design and Features: Sleek and Flexible The L60 is a complete lock assembly that works with doors that are between 1.37 and 2.17 inches thick and have a 2.37- or 2.75-inch backset and a 1-inch door hole diameter. It comes with interior and exterior escutcheons, a deadbolt latch and strike plate, two keys, a pair of NFC card fobs, assorted mounting hardware (including a screwdriver), and a quick start guide. Also included in the box are four AA batteries that provide power for up to one year before needing replacement.
The exterior escutcheon is made of zinc alloy and has a black finish and an IP65 weatherproof rating. It measures 6.2 by 2.3 by 0.9 inches (HWD) and contains a 12-button backlit touch screen that remains dark until you touch it. In the middle of the touch screen is a card icon that indicates where to place the NFC key card. There’s a fingerprint scanner above the screen, and below it is a round cover that slides up to reveal a keyway. Along the bottom edge is a USB-C port for powering the lock with a portable charger if the batteries die. A speaker on the left plays voice prompts (locked, unlocked) and other system sounds such as keypad beeps.

The interior escutcheon is also black and measures 5.3 by 2.5 by 1.1 inches. It has a thumb-turn knob for manually locking and unlocking the door, a reset button, and a removable panel that hides the battery compartment.
The L60 uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone, which means you’ll have to be within Bluetooth range (around 40 feet) to control the lock with the mobile app. It lacks a built-in Wi-Fi radio, but you can purchase a gateway for $29.99 that connects the lock to your home network, allowing you to control it from anywhere. Or you can purchase the L60 bundled with the hub for $139.99. The gateway also enables you to pair it with the Alexa and Google voice assistants, but the lock does not support HomeKit or IFTTT. Like the Proscenic L40 we reviewed last year, the L60 features an anti-peep keypad that adds digits to your real passcode to thwart onlookers from stealing your code. It also supports automatic locking to batten down the hatches after a specified period of time. It does not support automatic unlocking, a convenient feature that uses your phone’s location services to unlock the door when you approach it, which is available on the U-Bolt Pro Wi-Fi and several other models we have tested. The L60 uses the same Proscenic mobile app (available for Android and iOS) as the L40 and other Proscenic devices and appears in its own panel on the home screen. Tap the L60 panel to open a screen with a large circular button that is blue when the door is locked and green when it is unlocked. Tap the circle to lock and unlock the door.

Just below the lock control button is a battery life meter, and below that are buttons labeled User, Code, and Functions. The User button opens a screen where you can create full-time user accounts and assign PIN codes for each account. Here you can also register fingerprints and NFC cards for each user. Tap the Code button to create one-time and custom PIN codes, and tap the Functions button to adjust the speaker level, calibrate the lock, and configure auto lock times (between 5 seconds and 60 seconds). Here you can also set up voice unlock if you have a Wi-Fi gateway. Back at the bottom of the home screen, you can view lock and unlock events by date and time and see who triggered each event.

Installation and Performance: Straightforward and ReliableWhen I reviewed the Proscenic L40 smart lock, I griped that it was tough to install, but the L60 is much easier as it does not require drilling any extra holes. I started by removing my old lock and installing the L60 latch assembly. I slid the exterior escutcheon through the hole, attached it to the mounting plate using the included bolts, and attached the data cable to the interior escutcheon. After securing the interior escutcheon to the mounting plate, I installed the batteries, downloaded the Proscenic app, and created an account.I tapped Add Device on the app’s home screen, selected the L60 from the list of devices, and tapped the keypad to begin a search for the lock’s Bluetooth radio. The app immediately discovered the lock, so I tapped the L60 panel to pair them. If you haven’t already installed the lock, you can view a video installation tutorial at this point. I skipped the tutorial and followed the instructions to close and lock the door to calibrate the lock. I created a master PIN code and added my fingerprint to complete the installation. The L60 worked flawlessly in testing. The touch-screen number pad was well-illuminated and very responsive, and the fingerprint scanner and NFC key cards worked correctly. App commands to lock and unlock the door were executed instantly, and the auto-lock feature worked as intended. Custom codes adhered to my schedules and one-time codes expired after one use.Verdict: A Solid Choice for Easy AccessAt $109.99, the Proscenic L60 is a reasonably priced Bluetooth smart lock that offers reliable fingerprint, mobile app, touch-screen, and traditional key access. Though it lacks built-in Wi-Fi, you can pick up a $30 hub to control it remotely, use Google and Alexa voice commands, and have it interact with other smart home devices. If you prefer a smart lock that is already Wi-Fi enabled, check out the Editors’ Choice-winning Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro Wi-Fi, which doesn’t require a hub, supports proximity-based auto unlocking, offers additional integration opportunities via IFTTT, and can often be found on sale for around the same price as the L60 and hub bundle.

The Bottom Line
The Proscenic L60 is a Bluetooth-enabled smart lock that is reasonably priced, easy to install, and gives you multiple ways to lock and unlock your door.
