Weekly poll results: the Xperia 1 VI is promising but pricey, Xperia 10 VI gets the cold shoulder

Sony has always had a reputation for high quality but expensive products – and that is an apt description of the Xperia 1 VI, judging by the results and comments for last week’s poll. The poll also gauged interest in the Xperia 10 VI mid-ranger, but let’s start with the good news first… sorry, spoilers.

Half of voters are interested in the Mark 6 flagship. The unique camera setup drew attention and so did the much-improved battery life. Speaking of, that was helped by the lower resolution of the display, but that caused arguments – is 1080p+ enough for a flagship? Did 4K ever make sense on such a small display? Why didn’t Sony pick the middle option and go for 1440p+? You get a different answer depending on who you ask.

Sony confirmed that the Xperia 1 VI will not be available in the US (even though the Mark 5 was) and it’s not coming to other regions either. However, it seems that isn’t a huge issue as only 14% of voters are would-be buyers that live in such a region.

While the €1,400/£1,300 price of the 1 VI scared off many potential buyers, the Sony Xperia 10 VI had bigger issues than its €400/£350 price tag – mainly, it’s not all that good of a mid-ranger. Apple may get away with 60Hz displays in 2024, but Xperias aren’t iPhones.

A modern mid-ranger offers a 120Hz display (or more!), a higher tier chipset, longer software support (both the 1 and 10 are getting 3 OS updates and 4 years of security patches) and so on. The Xperia has its own advantages – like the 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD slot – but the people who insist on such things are in the minority.

The Sony Xperia 1 VI and 10 VI are currently on pre-order and will start shipping in June.
