This documentary was a Sundance hit, following human rights activist Seungeun Kim and his tireless quest to rescue people from the decaying dictatorship of North Korea. Interviews with families who made it out paint a portrait of how propaganda permeated every aspect of their lives, and watching them deal with the culture shock of the outside world is heartbreaking.Self Reliance (Jan. 12)
We can’t help but think that new comedy Self Reliance is inspired a bit by Netflix’s hit Squid Game. Jake Johnson plays an ordinary schlub who gets roped into competing in a game show broadcast on the dark web where he can take home $1 million if he can dodge assassins for 30 days. The only catch? He can only be killed if he’s alone, so he needs to make friends fast.A Shop For Killers (Jan. 17)
Here’s a fun-sounding Korean action series with a grisly twist. Young Jung Ji-An is orphaned when her father kills her mother and takes his own life. She’s taken in by her uncle, the proprietor of a mysterious shopping mall.
