Logitech’s MX Ink Stylus Brings 3D Art To Life On Meta Quest Headsets

Logitech has just introduced the MX Ink stylus, a game-changer in mixed reality (MR) technology designed for Meta Quest 2 and Quest 3 headsets. This $130 stylus aims to revamp how artists and designers interact with virtual spaces, making the experience as natural as using a pencil or paintbrush.
Meta Quest headsets have already made their mark far beyond gaming, evolving into powerful tools for media consumption and content creation. However, their native controllers, despite being accurate and low-latency, often feel awkward for detailed artistic tasks. That’s where the MX Ink stylus comes in. Weighing 29 grams and featuring swappable pressure-sensitive tips, it offers a familiar feel but in a three-dimensional environment.
But the MX Ink is more than just a stylus. It boasts advanced 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) tracking, haptic feedback, and a pressure-sensitive main button. These features give artists nuanced control, allowing them to sketch or manipulate objects in 3D as naturally as they would on paper. The stylus seamlessly transitions between 2D and 3D, making it incredibly versatile for various creative applications.

The MX Ink has several buttons, including two control buttons, a Meta button, and a pressure-sensitive main button, allowing for precise customization. It also comes with replaceable tips, a crucial feature for artists who need different levels of pressure sensitivity.
The MX Ink is the first “Made for Meta” product and was introduced at Meta Connect 2024. This collaboration between Logitech and Meta ensures deep integration with Meta’s settings and controls. Pairing the stylus with a headset is simple, with custom tutorials and settings for remapping buttons and adjusting pressure curves.
The haptic feedback engine adds a tactile feel to drawing in virtual space, giving artists a real sense of physicality.

Artists can expect robust software support at launch. The MX Ink is compatible with a variety of creative apps, such as Adobe Substance 3D Modeler, Gravity Sketch, Open Brush, and Realize Medical. This extends to PC VR applications through Quest Link or Air Link, ensuring a wide range of uses from day one. Developer kits are also available, signaling strong support and future expansions in app compatibility.
Practical features enhance the user experience further. The MX Ink stylus offers up to seven hours of battery life and can be recharged via a USB-C port or the optional MX Inkwell Charging Dock. This dock makes recharging easy—just drop the stylus in.

Most importantly, an MX Mat accessory provides a friction-free surface for writing and drawing, mimicking the feel of traditional media.

The MX Ink stylus is not compatible with the Meta Quest Pro, which is surprising given its advanced features. Despite this, its compatibility with the more popular Quest 2 and Quest 3 headsets positions it well for broad adoption among artists and designers.
This new stylus highlights Meta’s commitment to making its MR headsets more than just entertainment devices. With the MX Ink, Meta is moving into the productivity and creativity space, aiming to compete with products like Apple’s Vision Pro. Logitech’s collaboration with Meta might also lead to more “Made for Meta” products, expanding the ecosystem of MR accessories.
As MR technology evolves, tools like the MX Ink stylus will become essential for artists exploring new digital frontiers. By combining the tactile feedback of a traditional stylus with the immersive capabilities of MR, Logitech and Meta are offering creators a powerful new medium for expression. Whether designing intricate 3D models or sketching out ideas in virtual space, the MX Ink stylus promises a new level of precision and creativity.
With its release set for September, artists and designers have much to look forward to. The MX Ink stylus represents a significant step towards a future where the boundaries between physical and digital worlds blur, offering unprecedented opportunities for creativity and innovation.
